Open Source

Why open source?

Open source is not just about free software. It is a model that gives your business ownership, control, and predictable long-term costs — the opposite of the lock-in and license inflation that define proprietary platforms.

What open source means

Open-source software is released under a license that grants everyone the right to use, study, modify, and distribute it. The source code is visible, auditable, and yours — no black boxes and no hidden agendas.

For a business that translates into practical outcomes: you can read the code, fix issues yourself, work with any qualified partner, and never depend on a single vendor's roadmap.

Licensing economics

Traditional software is sold per license and per user. Costs scale with headcount, features are hidden behind pricing tiers, and vendors raise prices at renewal time.

Open source has no license fees. You pay for what delivers value — implementation, configuration, training, and support — and you own the result. A team of 20 costs the same to license as a team of 200: nothing.

Total cost of ownership (TCO)

The purchase price is only the first line of an invoice. The true cost of software includes licenses, renewals, upgrades, integrations, hardware, training, and the cost of being locked to a vendor.

Open source reduces the fixed-cost component of TCO to near zero and concentrates spending on the expertise that makes your system actually work. The result is a lower lifetime cost, a predictable budget, and no annual renew-or-be-forced-to-upgrade dilemma.

Vendor lock-in elimination

Proprietary ecosystems are designed to be sticky: proprietary formats, closed APIs, and licenses that make leaving expensive.

Open source relies on open, documented standards and portable data. If your partnership with a provider ends, your software and data go with you, and any qualified specialist can take over. Your IT estate stays yours.

Data ownership

In a closed system, your data often lives in formats and databases you can only reach through the vendor's tools.

With open source, your data is stored in standard formats on infrastructure you control. You can export it, back it up, analyze it, or move it whenever you want — no hostage negotiations.

Customization and integration

Closed platforms only offer customization through their own extension points, at the vendor's pace.

Open source exposes the whole system. Workflows, screens, integrations, and reports can be adapted precisely to your business — and you are never blocked by “that's not in the roadmap.”

Security and transparency

A public codebase is audited by thousands of developers and organizations worldwide. Vulnerabilities are found and fixed in the open, and you can review exactly how your data is handled.

You are not asked to trust a vendor's claims — you can verify. For security-critical environments this transparency is a genuine advantage.

Migration considerations

Moving to open source is a project, not a flip of a switch. The sensible path starts with a review of your current licenses, data, integrations, and workflows.

We recommend a phased approach: assess what you run today, identify the highest-cost and highest-risk systems, migrate one area at a time, and keep your data exportable at every step. Most organizations see meaningful savings within the first year without disrupting operations.

Open source first, proprietary when necessary

Our philosophy is pragmatic, not ideological. Open source is our default because it delivers the best combination of cost, control, security, and longevity for the vast majority of business systems.

When a genuinely niche capability is only available from a proprietary vendor — and the value outweighs the lock-in cost — we will say so plainly and help you isolate it at the edge of your stack so it never swallows your core.

  • Open source is the default choice
  • Proprietary only when a capability truly requires it
  • Data and systems must remain portable
  • You own your infrastructure, your data, and your roadmap
